This week’s bird is the: Great Horned Owl
1) The Great Horned Owl is very large, with a wingspan of roughly 4.5 feet. This owl lives across nearly the entirety of North America, and is the largest owl on the continent.
2) Because of its size, the Great Horned Owl can hunt and eat just about anything, including other birds of prey!
3) These owls (like other related species) are equipped with specialized feathers that direct sound into their ears. This amplifies the noise made by otherwise quiet prey, making them more effective hunters.
4) Like any respectable owl should, this species can turn its head more than 180 degrees.
5) In the North, these owls time when they breed based on the availability of food resources, meaning they only breed successfully in certain years.
Have a great week!
