BOTW 11/15 - 11/19
A eurasian re-run
Sorry for the delay! Please forgive me!!
A Pigeon? A Duck? Well technically yes but no, it's a Wigeon!
The bird of this week is the: Eurasian Wigeon
Fun Facts
1: Wigeons belong to a group called the dabbling ducks, classified by their behavior of feeding at the surface rather than diving for food.
2: You may be asking yourself: "Ben, why did you pick such a lame normal looking duck from Eurasia for the bird of the week?" But get this - the Eurasian Wigeon is one of the few birds from Eurasia that also shows up in the continental United States! Whoa...
3: When they do come to North America, the Eurasian Wigeon likes to hang out with the American Wigeons. Cross-continental diplomacy!
4: Ornithologists assume that the Eurasian Wigeons we see during the winter in the Pacific Northwest come all the way from Siberia. Some non-believers think there is a population that spends their summers in North America that has remained undetected... Either way, crazy!
5. In the "Old World" these birds spend their summers in Siberia and Northern Europe, migrating as far south as East Africa, India, and China.
Have a great week!
